Bicycle Driving on N. 4th St. Overpass: Columbus OH from Gordon Renkes on Vimeo.
North 4th Street (and the companion Summit/3rd St. going the other direction) are useful north/south surface streets in Columbus. North of downtown are overpasses over RR tracks and freeway ramps. 2 lanes on the right side of N. 4th diverge toward I670. N. 4th itself makes a gradual left bend arriving at the top, and a gradual right bend down the other side. < mapq.st/Ti7uxC > A bike lane on the left was included in restriping this summer after reconstruction work. This is beneficial for bicyclists who are traveling on the left side, guiding motorists to stay further out when passing around this bend. Without intersections at this particular location, this is one place where a bike lane stripe can reduce the chances of a side swipe or hit from behind collision.
Further on the down slope side are 2 left turn intersections. The bike lane should have ended before these. But as the video shows, at Goodale, the bike lane continues on the left side of frequent left turning motor traffic. Then the bike lane, and the left lane of motor traffic which intends to turn left onto an I670 entrance ramp, criss-cross each other. This video shows bicyclists how they can choose their line through this region, and avoid getting left hooked, or side swiped.
