Some Member Firms remain optimistic that industry goals can be achieved given the bipartisan support for national infrastructure that is in desperate need of repair. Many newly elected lawmakers are also eager to make their mark. With any administration, however, priorities can change quickly.

CNBC’s 2018 study, Top States for Business, ranked New York’s infrastructure as 7th worst in the country due to the poor state of road, bridge, and water system conditions.

ACEC’S ENGINEERING INC. — Cities Are Competing and Spending to Be ‘Smarter’

With the continuous evolution of information and communications technology, cities are becoming smarter, with some pulling ahead as smarter than others due to strategic investments. According to a recent report by International Data Corp. (IDC), smart city technology spending is expected to hit $81 billion in 2018 and grow to $158 billion by 2022. IDC forecasts the focus of smart initiatives and spending will be intelligent traffic and transit as well as fixed visual surveillance, followed by smart outdoor lighting and environmental monitoring.

Speeding Away from Zero: Rethinking a Forgotten Traffic Safety Challenge

Tuesday, January 22nd, 2019

Speeding-related fatalities account for a considerable proportion of U.S. road trauma, historically comprising approximately one-third of total fatalities. Nationally, there were 9,717 speeding-related fatalities in 2017 – about 26% of the total, though the proportion of speeding crashes differs dramatically across the states. Speeding-related fatalities are associated with a number of factors, including driver characteristics, risky behaviors such as alcohol-impaired driving, marijuana-impaired driving or failure to buckle up, and environmental factors such as the built environment and driving conditions.

The Interstate Highway System’s future is threatened by a persistent and growing backlog of physical and operational deficiencies and by a number of large and looming challenges. Most of its segments are decades old, subject to much heavier traffic than anticipated, and operating well beyond their design life without having undergone major upgrades or reconstruction.
