2019 Bridge Report

There are 47,052 bridges classified as structurally deficient and considered to be in poor condition, according to a new ARTBA analysis of the recently released U.S. Department of Transportation’s 2018 National Bridge Inventory (NBI) database. If placed end-to-end, they would stretch nearly 1,100 miles—the distance between Chicago and Houston.

In recent years, our planet has experienced some of the warmest temperatures ever recorded, record-breaking weather extremes, powerful storms, increasing tragic flooding from rising sea levels and associated storm surge, huge wildfires, and continued melting of glaciers and polar sea ice. The accelerating pattern of changes in the Earth’s climate is affecting the Great Lakes. Here, we draw on the array of existing research to assess how the shifting global climate impacts the unique Great Lakes region.

To prepare this report, the Task Force examined existing challenges within Chicago’s transportation system from accessibility concerns to rise in ride-hailing trips and congestion issues and the need for additional funding for infrastructure. The Task Force also discussed the future of transportation, including the advent of autonomous vehicles, expansion of electrification, implementation of new micro-mobility services, growth of freight delivery, and need for uniform data collection and data sharing.

Automated Vehicle Survey: Three in Four Americans Remain Afraid of Fully Self-Driving Vehicles

A year after a number of high-profile automated vehicle incidents, American attitudes toward fully self-driving cars have not rebounded. AAA’s annual automated vehicle survey found that 71 percent of people are afraid to ride in fully self-driving vehicles – indicating that overall sentiment has not yet returned to what it was prior to these incidents occurring (63 percent). AAA believes the key to helping consumers feel more comfortable with fully self-driving vehicles will be bridging the gap between the perception of automated vehicle technology and the reality of how it actually works in today’s cars.

Terminally Challenged: Addressing the Infrastructure Funding Shortfall of America’s Airports

While passenger and cargo traffic through airport facilities continues to grow at a record pace, our outdated aviation infrastructure is not keeping up with demand. As a result, far too many airports around the country are overcrowded and cramped. This survey shows that America’s airports require more than $128 billion in infrastructure upgrades by 2023, with more than 56 percent of the needs inside our aging terminals.

In an effort to help Hawaii’s residents and policy makers understand the needs of its infrastructure, the ASCE Hawaii Chapter developed this inaugural 2019 Infrastructure Report Card. This report provides an evaluation of some of Hawaii’s key areas of infrastructure, including aviation, bridges, coastal areas, dams, energy, roads, schools, solid waste, stormwater, wastewater, and drinking water. Common challenges facing Hawaii’s infrastructure across the board include aging infrastructure, lack of funding, and sea level rise.
