Today, the technology and information economy has created a tempo of quick-speed change and public/ private community interdependencies that have grown so great they have generated a new paradigm of local economic development and city building.

Friday, April 1st, 2011If you’ve ever ventured out into one of Chicago’s famous six-corner intersections, you know the streets don’t always feel safe. The facts bear this out. In 2009 there were over 4,500 crashes between Chicago drivers and pedestrians or cyclists, 35 of which were fatal. This is according to the Illinois Department of Transportation, which tracks traffic statistics.

In late 2010, Latitudeº asked 18 participants (10 from Boston, 8 from San Francisco) not to use their cars for one week. The vast majority of participants had ranked cars as their most necessary form of transportation, with the remainder using their cars at least weekly.

Over the next generation, the 13-state Northeast Megaregion is expected to grow by 26%, adding about 18 million residents. To assess the implications of this change for landscape conservation, Regional Plan Association and America 2050’s Northeast Landscape Initiatives Atlas now includes maps showing historic and current land use, and projections of future urban growth in the Northeast Megaregion through 2040.
