AIRPORT COOPERATIVE RESEARCH PROGRAM
Purchases of EVs are increasing throughout the United States, with the West Coast states accounting for a disproportionately high number of EVs on the road. Research undertaken for this report has shown that at least 37 airports in the United States are providing EV charging stations, most commonly in short-term or long-term parking facilities, and usually with no additional charging fee to customers. None of the airport sponsors interviewed reported the installation process as being particularly onerous, especially if up-front costs were alleviated by grants and if the existing electrical infrastructure was adequate to support the EV charger installation.
REGIONAL PLAN ASSOCIATION
The New York City subway system has made strides in recent years in upgrading stations, subway cars and passengers’ experience. But in one crucial area – signaling – the subway system remains antiquated, relying primarily on century-old technology to keep trains running. While New York is in the early stages of converting to communications-based train control, the modern telecommunications system that many of the world’s metro systems rely on today, the pace of change has been slow. At the current rate, a full transformation wouldn’t occur for more than 50 years, putting the city decades behind its peers around the globe.

While shifting businesses to an online model can create significant gains in energy efficiency, the energy appetite of the internet continues to outstrip those gains thanks to its dramatic growth. Critically, the internet’s growing energy footprint has thus far been mostly concentrated in places where energy is the dirtiest…But there is good news to report: since our last report, How Clean is Your Cloud? (April 2012),3 leading data center operators have taken key steps toward building a green internet, particularly those companies that have committed to build a 100% renewably powered platform. These commitments are having a profound impact in the real world, shifting investment from legacy coal, gas and nuclear power plants to renewable energy technologies, and disrupting the status quo among major electric utilities.
NATIONAL ASSOCIATION FOR CONVENIENCE AND FUEL RETAILING
In December 2013, the U .S . Energy Information Administration (EIA) released the early publication of its Annual Energy Outlook 2014 (AEO2014), providing projections for the energy markets through 2040 . NACS used EIA’s report to prepare the following analysis. “Future of Fuels 2014” seeks to determine how EIA’s projections will directly affect the retail fuels market, consumer use of specific types of light duty vehicles, and the pace at which alternative fuels may gain market share.

Although we might consider electricity a primary source of energy in our lives since we use it for a variety of household items, electricity is actually a secondary source. Solar power generation was the year’s top sector with more than 21,600 jobs announced. Other strong sectors included building efficiency (12,500) and public transportation (11,400). Job announcements were made in 46 states, with California’s roughly 15,400 jobs topping the list. California was followed by Texas, Hawaii, Maryland and Massachusetts.
