For the U.S. solar energy industry, 2011 was a historic year. On the positive side, the market for solar installations continued to boom, as the U.S. installed 1,855 megawatts (MW) of photovoltaic (PV) solar systems, representing 109% growth over 2010. The fourth quarter of 2011 saw 776 MW of PV installed, by far the most of any quarter in U.S. market history (473 MW was the previous record, set in the third quarter of 2011).

The California Core Green economy reflected greater resilience than the california economy as a whole during the recent recession. reflecting the brunt of the economic downturn, the total economy slumped by seven percent while the core Green economy contracted by three percent from January 2009 to 2010. over the long term, January 1995 to 2010, the total economy grew by 12 percent while jobs in the core Green economy increased by 53 percent. in other words, while the downturn reset core Green employment back to 2008 levels, total state employment was set back to 2001 levels.

REMAKING CITIES INSTITUTE
The City of Pittsburgh intends to replace its entire inventory of 40,000 street lights with light-emitting diode (LED) fixtures over the next five to ten years. When fully implemented the project is expected to save annually an estimated $1.7 million (70% savings) in energy and maintenance costs. In addition the conversion will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by almost 7 million metric tons annually.
