There has been significant attention in the transportation research field
regarding the extent to which transit investment supports “agglomerations
economies” – the ability of business firms to realize productivity gains
because of greater labor market access. This research study addresses
this same general issue of business productivity, market access and transit
service, but from a different perspective.
For the last several months, DDOT and the streetcar team have been busy at work along H Street and Benning Road on the last leg of streetcar construction. Right now the team is performing final design and construction for several areas of the project, including streetcar turnarounds, the Car Barn Training Center, pole and overhead wire installation, track installation for turnarounds, pocket tracks, and final roadway.

Bike-share has taken many forms over the course of its development, from free bikes left for a community to use at will to more technologically advanced and secure systems. In every iteration, the essence of bike-share remains simple: anyone can pick up a bike in one place and return it to another, making point-to-point, human-powered transportation feasible.

A review of data from the Federal Highway Administration, Federal Transit Administration and Census Bureau for America’s 100 most populous urbanized areas – which are home to over half of the nation’s population – shows that the decline in per-capita driving has taken place in a wide variety of regions. From 2006 to 2011, the average number of miles driven per resident fell in almost three-quarters of America’s largest urbanized areas for which up-to-date and accurate data are available.

The LYNX Blue Line in Charlotte is a popular, effective transportation option for people who live and work in and around the Queen City. Since opening in 2007, the 9.3-mile rail line has served more than 15,000 passengers daily, taking citizens to jobs, education, and sporting events.
Now, the Blue Line Extension will add 9 miles to the system, expanding the state’s first light rail corridor from Center City to the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. The expansion will support economic growth in the city and offer even more ways to connect people with places, goods and services.
