Developing nations aren’t the only ones with poor infrastructure. Across the U.S., examples of citizens, government officials and the press criticizing the condition of their roads and bridges, airports, schools or other infrastructure are easy to find. This should come as no surprise, says Scott Pattison, CEO of the U.S. National Governors Association (NGA), “because as a nation, we are critically underinvesting in our infrastructure.”

Infrastructure has become a popular topic, fueled by a widely held perception among the general public and many elected officials that the nation’s infrastructure is crumbling as a consequence of age and underinvestment. In fact, not all transportation and water infrastructure in the United States is falling apart—far from it. While highway, bridge, and water system maintenance backlogs exist in many places, the data do not support a picture of precipitous decline in total national spending or in the condition of the assets. Over the last decade, it has become increasingly clear that America’s infrastructure requires a significant upgrade. Roads, highways, bridges and tunnels have decayed and deteriorated—sometimes to the point of catastrophic failure. Yet, with tax dollars limited and funding for projects largely declining, finding a way out of the mess has been extraordinarily difficult.

Without new affordable homes and walkable neighborhoods, housing markets tighten and costs rise, leading to less disposable income, longer commutes, the need to work longer hours, more stress, and poorer health for the region’s households. This disparity falls most heavily on the region’s lower-income households who, as referenced in RPA’s report Pushed Out, have seen housing costs rise unabated and continue to get pushed further away from central, walkable areas with access to jobs2. But it affects others as well – young families, seniors and anyone who needs affordable housing and doesn’t want to or can’t spend hours a day behind the wheel.

He’s run a commercial real estate business, served as the mayor of Franklin, Tennessee and in 2011, he was appointed commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Transportation where he’s responsible for more than 3,400 employees. In Sept. 2017 the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials—Board Directors elected Schroer AASHTO president. View this complete post...Even in a nation’s capital typically behind the curve on technological matters, autonomy and self-driving automobiles continue to grab headlines. Case in point: The U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation passed a bill unanimously in October crafted to expedite the testing and deployment of partly and fully autonomous vehicles. While the bill must still pass the full Senate, a similar bill in the U.S. House of Representatives has already passed. Both measures have the same goals in mind – adjust traditional car standards to allow greater room for innovation and technological advancement by carmakers and give the federal government the ultimate authority on related governance.
