Motorcycle Crashes: Figures 1-5

UPPER GREAT PLAINS TRANSPORTATION INSTITUTE
Advancements in vehicle technology and upgrades to traffic safety laws have produced dramatic nationwide reductions in overall traffic crash fatalities and injuries over time. However, similar reductions have not been realized in motorcycle crashes. The Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA) projected an approximate 9% increase in motorcyclist fatalities nationwide in 2012, representing upsurges in fatalities in 14 of the last 15 years (GHSA 2013).

Dr. Camille Kamga, UTRC

“We really need to revamp our funding allocation process and develop outreach plans to engage more people. We must take advantage of the new technological tools to engage the younger generation, start talking about infrastructure at a younger age, in primary school, so people understand that infrastructure has a lifespan like any other organism. It has to live, it has to deteriorate, and if you don’t maintain it it’s going to die.”

Infrastructure in Vermont

Vermont Bridges

VERMONT OFFICE OF THE GOVERNOR
Vermont faces significant challenges in improving our state’s aging infrastructure. About one-quarter of Vermont’s state highway bridges are over 70 years old, and the state spent $463 million on infrastructure in FY11, including roadways (32%), Interstate and State bridges (21%). Tropical Storm Irene devastated infrastructure in many parts of the state, damaging over 500 miles of roads and destroying dozens of bridges. With the help of our federal partners, almost all of that damage has been repaired and strengthened to withstand future weather challenges.

Chicago: Fighting Urban Flooding

Friday, October 25th, 2013

From the Center for Neighborhood Technology (CNT):
“Unlike flash flooding, urban flooding can affect people regardless of whether or not they live in a designated floodplain. It’s not about the creeks rising. Rather, it’s about how the impermeable built environment prevents water from being absorbed into the ground. Rainfall on asphalt cannot sink into the soil, so it often ends up running onto properties and into basements nearby.

STRONG TOWNS
A BETTER BRAINERD
This report outlines how this community can make small, incremental investments in just one part of one neighborhood. By watching how our neighbors use the city, by asking them where their daily struggles are, by getting out on the street and opening our hearts and minds to what is actually going on, we can discern what the pressing needs are. These are our high return investments.

Renewable Energy in the Midwest

Wednesday, October 23rd, 2013
Electricity Generation by Source, 2012

AMERICAN COUNCIL ON RENEWABLE ENERGY
The Midwest’s remarkable renewable energy resources, vast agricultural land, strong manufacturing base, and leading research institutions have propelled the region to become a hub for renewable energy development. It is home to over a third of U.S. wind power capacity and 80% of U.S. biofuel production capacity. However, uncertainty about federal policy – like the production tax credit (PTC) and renewable fuels standard (RFS) – as well as transmission constraints could hinder Midwestern renewable energy capacity additions in the near term, with 2013 expected to yield only a fraction of the installations seen in previous years.

Penn Station

REGIONAL PLAN ASSOCIATION
MUNICIPAL ART SOCIETY OF NEW YORK
New York and the tri-state region urgently need a new Penn Station and a new Madison Square Garden. Penn Station is our region’s gateway. Hundreds of thousands of people pass through the station every day. The station, which replaced the original 1910McKim, Mead and White Beaux Arts-style building,is severely overcrowded. Built to handle 200,000travelers, the station now serves some half a million. As public transit use and our region’s population expand, even more people will be crammed into the station’s jammed corridors and stairwells.
