…this configuration in Chicago may be the most heavily used by not only bike riders but pedestrians as well. During the busiest times of rush hour and lunchtime, it sure gets a ton of use by plenty of people. I was lucky to grab Kyle Whitehead from the Active Transportation Alliance for 30 minutes to show me both of Chicago’s intersections. This one is at the intersection of Dearborn & Randolph which was completed near the end of 2016.

The number of pedestrian fatalities in the United States (U.S.) increased 25 percent from 2010 to 2015, while at the same time, total traffic deaths increased by about six (6) percent. Pedestrians now account for the largest proportion of traffic fatalities recorded in the past 25 years. Earlier studies by the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA), based on preliminary data reported by State Highway Safety Offices (SHSOs), were the first to predict recent increases in pedestrian fatalities.

Every time I post a new video on the sneckdown phenomenon, I get all sorts of comments, emails and tweets on social media that it will never work. That you can’t justify the idea. That I should “stop hating on cars”. That no matter how well done, the video showing sneckdowns 10 feet from the curb that have been there for weeks (that drivers are successful navigating) that they couldn’t work. That we still need all the asphalt for video and that pedestrians are second class citizens.

The Hip Hop Architecture Camp was created by The Hip Hop Architect and is an initiative of The Urban Arts Collective with the mission is to introduce traditionally marginalized or underrepresented youth to architecture, urban planning and economic development through the lens of Hip Hop culture. The initiative allows students and community members to engage in re-mixing the visions for their communities and neighborhoods in ways that are culturally relevant, sustaining, and responsive during an intensive one week camp. The one week camps are structure for four different learning levels; grades 4-6, middle school, high school and college.

We looked at 8 of the 17 streets where bike lanes were installed between 2010 and 2015 with sufficient collisions and ridership data to draw conclusions about the effectiveness of the projects. Overall, the number of automobile collisions decreased, pedestrian collisions stayed relatively flat, and bicycle crash risk decreased, after accounting for increased ridership.

Rail transit systems must constantly be monitored and improved to maintain and enhance safety, to catch small problems before they become big ones, and to provide extra layers of protection against disasters…Highway vehicle crashes kill and injure thousands of people each year. But these crashes are largely preventable.
