As the Great Lakes region undertakes planning, policy development, and investments to revitalize its economic base, water is a cornerstone for future growth and prosperity. Jobs in economic sectors that depend directly on water infrastructure generate $447 billion in wages annually. Almost a quarter of the jobs in the region are in water-dependent industries such as agriculture, recreation, and manufacturing. Indeed, water is a fundamental strength upon which the region can build.

Across this country, 85% of our citizens now live in cities and metropolitan economies. 89% of the jobs are in the cities and in metropolitan economies. 91% of America’s nearly $20 trillion GDP is created in cities and metropolitan economies. We are driving the economic growth of this country. And our message is that by partnering with mayors, by looking at the creative solutions that are being deployed all across this country, seeing the innovative ideas, seeing the massive investment in infrastructure, but also embracing the idea of inclusion and ways in which we can all move forward together, is the way to go…We’re always coming around the table. That’s the strength, I believe, of being a mayor and having to always listen to every opinion, not gerrymandered ideas with narrow constituencies. We’re going to continue to do that.

Many people take the physical aspects of the internet for granted. Some would believe it’s purely non-physical, like some sort of digital magic. While this may appear to be true, the internet is a physical entity that snakes its way through our walls and in vast cable networks beneath streets, railways, and oceans. As technology advances, we need to acknowledge the physical limitations of our current digital infrastructure and consider the steps necessary to continue meeting the demands we place on the internet. While many cities feel the immediate positive outcomes from wealth flooding into metropolitan regions, they also feel the negative impact on community members of varying income levels – particularly, those at the bottom that face increased housing prices, greater need for social services and growing concern for community safety. The income inequality and wealth gaps are at outsized levels, with the richest 0.1 percent holding the same amount of wealth as the bottom 90 percent. And when examined through a racial equity lens, the disparities become even starker; on average, white families have six times the wealth of African American and Hispanic families. This is where we are now. Unfortunately, the current policy environment at the national level isn’t focused on alleviating these inequities—cities are.

Without new affordable homes and walkable neighborhoods, housing markets tighten and costs rise, leading to less disposable income, longer commutes, the need to work longer hours, more stress, and poorer health for the region’s households. This disparity falls most heavily on the region’s lower-income households who, as referenced in RPA’s report Pushed Out, have seen housing costs rise unabated and continue to get pushed further away from central, walkable areas with access to jobs2. But it affects others as well – young families, seniors and anyone who needs affordable housing and doesn’t want to or can’t spend hours a day behind the wheel.
