PEW ENVIRONMENTAL GROUP
Over the last half decade, the clean energy economy has emerged around the world as a major new opportunity for investment, manufacturing, jobs and environmental protection. This report explores scenarios for the dynamic expansion of electricity from renewable resources over the next decade…While renewable energy asset financing is projected to rise in the United States under all scenarios, the United States would benefit from strong clean energy policies. If enhanced national clean energy policies were enacted, investment would ramp up to $53 billion annually by 2020—a rise of 237 percent over 2010 levels.
A new report from the National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform says that “Our nation is on an unsustainable fiscal path…The problem is real, and the solution will be painful.” The Commission recommends a 15-cent per gallon gas tax increase to fund transportation infrastructure.

A majority of Wisconsinites polled between Nov. 15 and Nov. 17 oppose the Milwaukee-to-Madison rail project, and opposition grows slightly as respondents learn more about it, according to a poll sponsored by the Wisconsin Policy Research Institute. Thirty-six percent sided with the argument stating that “supporters of the passenger rail project say that it is an important addition to the transportation system in Wisconsin and is being paid for by 800 million dollars in federal money.

The United States has ample renewable energy resources. Land-based wind, the most readily available for development, totals more than 8000 GW of potential capacity. The capacity of concentrating solar power is nearly 7,000 GW in seven southwestern states. The generation potential of photovoltaics is limited only by the land area devoted to it, 100–250 GW/100 km2 in the United States. To illustrate energy capacity vs. projected demand, the US generated electric power at an average rate of approximately 450 GW in 2009, with peaks over 1000 GW during the summer months. By 2035, electricity demand is projected to rise 30%.

The past few months have been an exciting time as large and small communities, representing all corners of the country, have worked on developing collaborative planning processes that will address the unique conditions in their region and which will improve the quality of life for the diverse people that live, work and play there…The impetus for this has been competition for grants springing from the unprecedented partnership announced last year between the Department of Housing and Urban Development, the Department of Transportation and the Environmental Protection Agency.

Minnesota needs a transportation system that is safer, enhances and preserves communities, and saves families and businesses money through greater reliance on public transit, bicycling, and walking, and better maintenance of the infrastructure we already have. Transportation is about much more than getting from A to B. It is not an end, but it should be a means for a community to achieve broader goals of economic development, neighborhood revitalization, and environmental sustainability.
Dr. Robert Paaswell, Distinguished Professor of Civil Engineering at the City College of New York, is also the founding Director of the City University Institute for Urban Systems, a major University-wide initiative to examine the intersection of new technology, changing institutional structure and innovative finance on the provision of infrastructure in the 21 st Century. Paaswell is Director Emeritus of the federally supported University Transportation Research Center (UTRC).
