As with many major proposals, the numbers don’t quite add up just yet. Walker wanted to make up the deficit by increasing taxes, but this idea was rejected by state lawmakers. Without the additional state funding though, Alaska will have to rely on help from the federal government. By supplying $280 million in state funds on its own, Alaska would receive $1.1 billion in matching funds from federal funding. Critics of the proposal note that Alaska is currently running out of savings, and faces a $2.4 billion deficit.

Since early 2016, a new 3,600-ton capacity geothermal system has been providing cooling for the entire terminal building at the Nashville International Airport, significantly reducing the facility’s use of both electricity and water. The nearly $10.4 million project finished three months ahead of schedule and under budget.

This week, President Trump announced a proposal to privatize air traffic control throughout our nation’s aviation system. If the proposal becomes law, the FAA will no longer be responsible for managing air traffic control; instead, the responsibility will be delegated to a nonprofit corporation headed by board members representing various sectors of the aviation industry.

“Interesting fact: two thirds of the people that used to travel between Washington and New York used to travel by the shuttle, by air, and a third by rail; and now the numbers are reversed: it’s two thirds by Amtrak or other regional rail and a third by air, and I think that speaks to the resurgence in rail. And I think also increasing numbers of travelers are interested in being responsible commuters, whether it’s a trip across the Hudson or a trip to Washington, and I think that influences their choice of commute and travel as well.”

The ACI-NA total estimate of U.S. airports’ infrastructure needs for 2017 through 2021, adjusted for inflation, is nearly $100 billion ($99.9 billion) or almost $20 billion annualized. Sixty-three percent of the development is intended to accommodate growth in passenger and cargo activity, and thirty percent is intended to rehabilitate existing infrastructure, maintain a state of good repair, and keep airports up to standards for the aircraft that use them.

Americans spend 6.9 billion hours delayed in traffic— that’s 42 hours per driver. In the 2017 Infrastructure Report Card, ASCE graded bridges a C+, roads a D, aviation a D, and transit a D-. Collectively, transportation infrastructure widens the nation’s infrastructure investment gap, with unmet funding needs of $1.1 trillion for surface transportation and $42 billion for aviation between 2016 and 2025.
