Detroit, MI: Green Infrastructure Pilot Project

University of Michigan landscape architect Joan Nassauer, a professor in the School of Natural Resources and Environment, leads a pilot project to design and build new forms of green infrastructure on vacant properties in Detroit’s far-west-side Cody Rouge neighborhood. Four “bioretention gardens” that capture and hold stormwater are under construction now on sites where abandoned homes were razed.

Oregon DOT: 2015 Bridge Condition Report

ODOT’s 2015 Bridge Condition Report summarizes bridge condition ratings on state highways and performance measures based on National Bridge Inventory and ODOT data. As a consistent reference point for evaluation, ODOT uses the bridge conditions snapshot provided annually to the Federal Highway Administration. Data from the April 2015 submittal is the basis of this report.

Dynamic Scoring and Infrastructure Spending

We review recent trends in federal infrastructure spending and the policy case for dynamic scoring of revenue and spending legislation. The use of dynamic scoring depends upon the magnitudes of near‐term impacts on economy‐wide spending and the long‐run impacts on productivity. We conclude that federal infrastructure investment should be dynamically scored…A simple example suggests that $100 billion in new infrastructure spending could generate an extra $62.5 to $165.5 billion in national output over the next twenty years, based on a range of scenarios. Assuming a 20 percent effective tax rate, this $100 billion infrastructure investment would generate a 20‐year revenue offset ranging from $12.5 to $33.1 billion.

Status of Positive Train Control Implementation

In 2008, after multiple accidents and urging from safety advocates and experts, as well as the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), Congress mandated that railroads implement Positive Train Control (PTC) systems by December 31, 2015. A majority of railroads will not meet this statutory deadline.

Washington State DOT: How To Move a Bridge (Time Lapse)

Over the weekend of Friday, Aug. 7, 2015, crews relocated the obsolete 379-ton 1920’s era Puyallup River bridge about a quarter-mile to WSDOT property. WSDOT’s goal is to recycle the truss by offering it for another purpose. If unsuccessful, WSDOT will recycle the steel.
