Now that the tunneling machine Bertha’s work is complete, it’s possible to fly a drone with a video camera from end-to-end inside Seattle’s SR 99 tunnel. In two minutes, you’ll see two miles of ongoing construction work. The upper roadway of the tunnel’s double-deck highway is more than 85% complete. Up next? Installation of the lower roadway, and all the systems it takes to operate a modern tunnel.

The rapid adoption of ride-hailing poses significant challenges for transportation researchers, policymakers, and planners, as there is limited information and data about how these services affect transportation decisions and travel patterns. Given the long-range business, policy, and planning decisions that are required to support transportation infrastructure (including public transit, roads, bike lanes, and sidewalks), there is an urgent need to collect data on the adoption of these new services, and in particular their potential impacts on travel choices.

While it is sometimes assumed that public transportation is only essential for large urban areas with significant traffic congestion, this report shows that public transportation can also play an important role in rural areas and small towns. Although public transit serves a minor portion of total rural travel, the trips that are provided are particularly valuable. By examining current trends, this report reveals the increasingly critical connection between public transit and rural communities and small towns. This paper also looks at rural public transit cost efficiency, and describes successful examples of smaller community public transit programs.

Despite Congress’ rejection of deep cuts, the Trump Administration has resurrected the idea of dismantling Amtrak’s national network of passenger rail service routes. This discussion of eliminating “unprofitable” Amtrak routes is occurring while the nation’s transportation infrastructure is deteriorating and the nation is struggling to reach a consensus on how to address a decades-long pattern of underinvestment in our infrastructure.
