NYC: “Solar for Sandy” Installation

In October 2013, Global Green USA, with the support of IKEA and the NYC Dept. of Parks and Recreation, announced the Red Hook Recreation Center as the recipient of the first, official ‘Solar For Sandy’ install…’Solar For Sandy’ will bring renewed resilience to the Red Hook community as it continues to recover from the superstorm. This is the first of five community facilities in New York/New Jersey that will receive grid-tied, back-up solar energy systems. We also conducted a pilot install in Far Rockaway, NY last summer.

During that same period, growth in vehicle travel slowed and then stopped, with Americans today driving about as much on average as we did in 1996…Both changes have taken place most rapidly among young Americans, who have been the earliest and most enthusiastic adopters of new technologies, as well as the new social networking tools that are the foundation of the emerging “sharing economy.” They have also been the group that has reduced its driving the most, with the average American between 16 and 34 years of age driving a startling 23 percent less in 2009 than in 2001.

Today, U.S. port facilities rely as much upon networked computer and control systems as they do upon stevedores to ensure the flow of maritime commerce that the economy, homeland, and national security depend upon. Yet, unlike other sectors of critical infrastructure, little attention has been paid to the networked systems that undergird port operations. No cybersecurity standards have been promulgated for U.S. ports, nor has the U.S. Coast Guard, the lead federal agency for maritime security, been granted cybersecurity authorities to regulate ports or other areas of maritime critical infrastructure.
