How “Levee Wars” Are Making Floods Worse

In our latest Vox+ProPublica collaboration, we dive into how a structure that’s designed to protect us from floods, may actually be making them worse. High levees come at a high cost, often pushing water into communities that can’t afford the same protection. To demonstrate, we built a giant, scientific model of a river with levees — complete with adorable tiny houses.

Michigan DOT: Wayne Railroad Diamond Replacement

Starting the night of August 14 through August 15, crews from Amtrak and CSX Transportation rebuilt four railroad diamond crossings at Wayne Junction near Wayne, Michigan. Jointly owned by the Michigan Department of Transportation and CSX, this important crossing is utilized by Amtrak trains traveling between Chicago, Detroit, and Pontiac, as well as by CSX and Norfolk Southern freight trains. Project costs were covered 75 percent by CSX and 25 percent by MDOT.

Medford, OR: Work Zone Dangers

Why Tunnels Don’t Collapse

Tunnels play an important role in our constructed environment as passageways for mines, conveyance for utilities, and routes for transportation. Rock bolts are a type of reinforcement for stabilizing rock excavations, usually made from steel bars or bolts. This simple construction method dramatically reduces the cost of making tunnels through rock safe from collapse.
