We are continuing to see high rates of obesity affecting our communities. This is in large part due to our environmental infrastructure and behavior. It has been proven that the risk of obesity increases by 6% for each hour driven per day. But the rocket scientist’s idea to use a tele porter is not quite the solution to our problem. You can more easily become a Walking Advocate to make your community safer and more walkable.

North Dakota: Massive Explosion Following Train Derailment

A train is derailed west of Casselton, North Dakota. It happened at 35th Street and 154th Avenue Southeast just before 2:20 p.m. Monday. No injuries have been reported so far. Several area emergency teams are on scene and are setting up an incident command center. A viewer who is about a half mile from the derailment tells Valley News Live she can see large flames.

San Diego, CA: Midday Traffic Reorganized by Color

The source footage for this video is a 4-minute shot from the Washington Street bridge above State Route 163 in San Diego captured at 2:39pm Oct 1, 2013. My aim is to reveal the color palette and color preferences of contemporary San Diego drivers in addition to traffic patterns and volumes. There are no CG elements, these are all real cars that have been removed from one sample and reorganized.

Las Vegas: Arts in Transit Along the Sahara Express

The Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada (RTC) commissioned artist Susan Kaprov to develop three dynamic themes for the Arts in Transit program: “The Art of Neon,” the “Natural Environment of Southern Nevada,” and “Multi-Modal Transportation in Las Vegas.” Thirty-five transit stops along the Sahara Express route had a unique art piece installed.

Washington, DC: Streetcar Construction

For the last several months, DDOT and the streetcar team have been busy at work along H Street and Benning Road on the last leg of streetcar construction. Right now the team is performing final design and construction for several areas of the project, including streetcar turnarounds, the Car Barn Training Center, pole and overhead wire installation, track installation for turnarounds, pocket tracks, and final roadway.
