Wisconsin DOT: How J-Turns Make Intersections Safer
Posted by Infra on Friday, April 25th, 2014J- turns are located on 4-lane divided highways and prevent direct crossing and left-turn movements. These side road movements are made indirectly by making a right turn, traveling about a quarter-mile on the divided main road, and then making a U-turn to proceed in the opposite direction on the main road toward the intended destination. A J-turn reduces a significant number of the severe, right-angle, “far” side crashes. Relative to other improvement concepts, it is a low-cost treatment that can be quickly implemented, does not require property acquisition or relocation of homes and businesses, and minimizes environmental impact.

Cambridge, MA: Is This Two-Lane Street Wide Enough?
Posted by Content Coordinator on Monday, April 21st, 2014A group of recreational cyclists on an urban ride offers an opportunity to explore the capacity limitation of a two-lane arterial street. It is also fair to ask whether the striping of the street with bike lanes benefits primarily bicyclists or motorists, and whether these cyclists understand how to ride as safely and cooperatively as possible on such a street.

Yet our water infrastructure is essentially invisible and its value often goes unnoticed by consumers and ratepayers. Community benefit strategies and green infrastructure help water utilities translate the value of their work and in the process they make our communities stronger.
