ACEC Engineering Excellence Awards “Grand Conceptor” Winner: The Bayonne Bridge Between New York and New Jersey

Already a marvel of 20th century engineering, the new Bayonne Bridge is now also a 21st century sensation. Since 1931, the iconic superstructure, formerly the world’s largest steel arched bridge, has spanned the Kill Van Kull, one of the most heavily traveled cargo-carrying waterways, accessing the port of New York and New Jersey. Engineering firms HDR and WSP USA joined forces to modernize the bridge and allow larger ships to cross under it. At the Engineering Excellence Awards Gala, hosted by ACEC on April 17th, Milestone 1 of the “Raising the Bayonne Bridge” project was awarded the highest honor of “Grand Conceptor.”

A Year From L Train Shutdown, TransAlt Begins Series of Bike Trains

The L train shutdown — which will compel tens of thousands of New Yorkers to find an alternate route between Brooklyn and Manhattan — is a year away. But it’s not too soon to prepare. This morning Transportation Alternatives organized the first L Train Bike Train to get Brooklynites in the swing of riding across the Williamsburg Bridge into Manhattan.

City Beautiful: Are urban gondolas a viable form of public transportation?

YouTube channel “City Beautiful” travels to Medellin to document a functioning transit system based on urban gondolas. Several proposals could bring similar transit options to the United States, where cities like New York and Portland have already adopted small scale urban gondola use.

Utah DOT: Top Ten Projects of 2018

UDOT crews will work on 188 highway construction projects scheduled across the state this year, with a combined value of $1.46 billion. Planned improvements range from small sidewalk and street light installations, to the rebuilding of a 12-lane section of urban freeway. Within the Top 10, projects include widening and rebuilding freeways, constructing new interchanges or redesigning existing ones, and repaving and upgrading other local/regional highways.

Building Highways in the Sky: State DOTs Leading the Evolution of Drones

In this Transportation TV News Special Report, Building Highways in the Sky: State DOTs Leading the Evolution of Drones learn about a March 2018 survey by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials that shows 35 of 44 responding state departments of transportation (80 percent) are deploying unmanned aircraft systems (UAS), or drones, for a wide range of purposes. The survey finds that 20 state DOTs have incorporated drones into their daily operations. Another 15 state DOTs are in the research phase – testing drones to determine how they can be utilized. “This is another example of how state DOTs are advancing innovation to improve safety and productivity for the traveling public,” said Bud Wright AASHTO executive director. “Drones are being used to significantly cut the time it takes to gather data, which is leading to major time and cost savings.” Use this link to see the complete results of the March 2018 Survey.
