Today’s older Americans enjoy a level of mobility and an active lifestyle that far outpaces previous generations. Demographic trends indicate that the number and proportion of older Americans have increased dramatically in recent years and will continue to do so. The provision of transportation improvements that will make it easier for older American’s to maintain their mobility will benefit users of all ages. And anticipated developments in self-driving and connected vehicles have the potential to provide older Americans with additional mobility options in the future.

One of the greatest fiscal challenges facing our elected officials is dealing with aging infrastructure. As the population grows and shifts, new classrooms must be built and equipped to meet our children’s needs. As roads and bridges wear out, they must be repaired or replaced to ensure our safety. And as outdated water lines begin to crack and fail, they must be upgraded to carry clean drinking water safely and efficiently. These examples are just a few of the demands confronting government officials as they struggle with the daunting task of matching limited funds to seemingly unlimited needs.

In January, NDOT broke ground on a $78 million dollar widening and upgrade to a six-mile-long stretch of U.S. Highway 95 between Ann and Kyle Canyon roads in northwest Las Vegas. The project will relieve congestion, improve efficiency and enhance safety, while providing capacity for future growth. Currently, over 52,000 vehicles daily travel through the corridor; however, traffic is expected to more than double over the next two decades.

On January 4th 2018, Bud Wright, executive director of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO), appeared live on CSPAN’s Washington Journal. The broadcast focused on the topic of infrastructure investment and the challenges ahead this year. Wright spoke on behalf AASHTO’s members; the transportation departments in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. This video contains experts of Wright’s comments about key issues such as public and private transportation investment, project streamlining and fixing the troubled Highway Trust Fund.
