CONGRESSIONAL BUDGET OFFICE
By themselves, fuel taxes cannot provide a strong incentive for people to avoid overusing highways-that is, to forgo trips for which the costs to themselves and others exceed the benefits. This study examines broad alternatives for federal funding of highways, focusing on fuel taxes and on taxes that could be assessed on the basis of the number of miles that vehicles travel.
CENTER FOR CLEAN AIR POLICY
The preponderance of the evidence leads us to conclude that an inclusive planning process that yields more walkable neighborhoods with broader housing and transportation options can help communities, businesses and individuals make money, save money and improve quality of life.
Congressional action on transportation this year, including the shape of the next surface transportation bill, will be inevitably influenced by the changed political geography of the 112th Congress. Not only will the level of funding for transportation be dictated by new, fiscally conservative House majority , but the program priorities will be influenced by a newly elected GOP representation that largely hails from small-town and suburban America.

NATIONAL COMMISSION ON THE BP DEEPWATER HORIZON OILSPILL AND OFFSHORE DRILLING
The oil and gas industry needs now to regain that trust, but doing so will require it to take bold action to make clear that business will no longer be conducted as usual in the Gulf. Industry must seize the opportunity to demonstrate that it is fully committed to subjecting its own internal operations to fundamental change and not merely because it is being forced to do so.
CENTER FOR TRANSIT-ORIENTED DEVELOPMENT
The demand for transit across the U.S. is growing, and more and more transit corridors are proposed and built every year. In 2008, 78 regions in 37 states had proposed 400 transit projects worth $248 billion, and these numbers have continued to rise…But many regions start to build transit networks with a single major corridor, and with so many stations opening every year, there is a growing need to understand how corridor planning can facilitate not only successful transportation outcomes but also successful transit-oriented development (TOD).
THE ROAD INFORMATION PROGRAM (TRIP)
Nearly a quarter of the nation’s major urban roads are rated in substandard or poor condition, providing motorists with a rough ride and increasing the cost of operating a vehicle. While the share of the nation’s major urban roads in poor condition decreased from 2007 to 2008, potential deficits in state budgets, the completion of federal transportation stimulus projects and the failure of Congress to approve a long-term federal surface transportation program, may lead to worsening urban pavement conditions.
