Our goal was to gain insight on what voters find relevant in the infrastructure discussion, along with ideas on how to move things forward.

“These public-private partnerships that they tout really don’t work. We tried that in downtown Las Vegas to do the new Project Neon, and just couldn’t generate enough revenue from the private sector, so we know that is not the “silver bullet.” I’m opposed to privatizing government services, because then the priority shifts from service to profit, and that never works. If you talk about something like air traffic control, that’s especially egregious because we have the safest system there is; we’re going to now undermine that.”

Public, private stakeholder input sought on infrastructure regulatory reform

The U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) recently announced it has published a Federal Register notice seeking public input on regulatory reform regarding infrastructure projects, including the identification of hurdles that currently exist and how to alleviate them. Those interested in offering comments have until July 24 to respond.

Transportation Infrastructure: Notice of Review of Policy, Guidance, and Regulation

The Department of Transportation (DOT) is reviewing its existing policy statements, guidance documents, and regulations to identify unnecessary obstacles to transportation infrastructure projects. As part of this review, the Department invites affected stakeholders and the public to identify non-statutory requirements that the Department imposes and that should be removed or revised.

Trump’s Air Traffic Control Privatization Proposal: Stakeholder Reactions

This week, President Trump announced a proposal to privatize air traffic control throughout our nation’s aviation system. If the proposal becomes law, the FAA will no longer be responsible for managing air traffic control; instead, the responsibility will be delegated to a nonprofit corporation headed by board members representing various sectors of the aviation industry.

“I commend the Administration for talking about a trillion dollars, but right now they’re only talking about putting $200 billion of public money up and the rest coming from other sources in the private sector. And while there’ve been some successes of that in this country as well as overseas, I don’t think we can afford to wait for a financing program to fully mature before we make significant infrastructure investments. It has to be done now; the federal government has to recognize that they need to spend this money. They can’t continue to hold the dollars hostage going forward.”
