Many people take the physical aspects of the internet for granted. Some would believe it’s purely non-physical, like some sort of digital magic. While this may appear to be true, the internet is a physical entity that snakes its way through our walls and in vast cable networks beneath streets, railways, and oceans. U.S. News and World Report recently released a comprehensive list ranking infrastructure across the fifty states. The list focuses on three key items: energy, transportation and internet. These infrastructure rankings are part of a series of similar lists authored by the same organization, including Best States Overall, Health Care Rankings and Economy Rankings. According to Brian Kelly, editor and chief content officer at U.S. News, “The value of a ranking like this is we use our judgment to say, it’s not just one thing that makes a state great. It’s a combination of things.”

The freshwater salinization syndrome can increase risks to the safety of drinking water and infrastructure. Elevated salt levels in drinking water can contribute to hypertension in people on sodium-restricted diets and is of concern to people requiring kidney dialysis (9). Salinization and alkalinization influence the corrosivity of water, and this can affect leaching of metals from pipes carrying drinking water (9, 68).
