In Florida, Republican state senator Jeff Brandes is making the case that Pinellas County – home of the last metro area in the U.S. to develop a regional transit network – shouldn’t invest in light rail because autonomous vehicles will make mass transit pointless…In that spirit, I’ve put together a list of recommendations that Mr. Brandes can use in developing policy to prepare for this brave new world of robotic transportation. It’s one thing not to waste money on a boondoggle technology like light rail that’s faithfully served people for barely even 100 years –if we’re serious about autonomous vehicles and their guaranteed ability to solve all of our problems, we need to be more proactive.

Wednesday, October 8th, 2014In August 2014 we completed replacement of the Barton Corner Bridge, which carries four lanes of I-95 plus two auxiliary lanes at a busy interchange with Route 2 on the Warwick/West Warwick line. Using accelerated bridge construction, we built two halves of the bridge on land adjacent to the overpass, and then moved them into place. This enabled us to build the bridge much faster compared with conventional construction methods, which would have taken twice the time. This approach also allowed us to do the work with no impact to Interstate traffic prior to installation.

Tuesday, October 7th, 2014Wyoming Department of Transportation’s $146.2 million Togwottee Trail to Yellowstone project increased safety and mobility by upgrading a 50-year-old road on a major route leading to Yellowstone National Park and Grand Teton National Park. New under-crossings were built so wildlife and snowmobilers can pass under the highway safely. New shoulders, passing lanes, and upgraded bridges and parking facilities allow a safe trip through some of America’s most beautiful scenery. Wyoming Department of Transportation’s Togwottee Trail to Yellowstone project was recognized as a Regional Winner in the 2014 America’s Transportation Awards competition and it is also a Top 10 finalist, competing for the National Grand Prize and the People’s Choice Award.
