The longest government shutdown in history continues and the impact has spread far beyond government workers and their families. It is difficult to find any business, school, hospital, city, county, college, university or local government organization that is not suffering as a result of the shutdown. The negative impact on retail establishments of all types, farmers, contractors, social service organizations and citizen workers has been great as well. It strikes at the heart of the country’s economic stability and it is devastating for issues related to the nation’s crumbling infrastructure.

In the House, Democrats won control from the Republicans and now hold the majority. In the Senate, Republicans maintained power and even added seats to their majority. The most recent announcement of a major development that will take advantage of the Opportunity Zones program is in Pennsylvania. A developer has announced plans to build what will be the tallest building outside the main business and commercial area of the city. The project, a 30-33 story, $130 million, mixed-use facility, will include 250 apartments, two floors of office space and space for restaurants on the first floor.

This possibility seems to be leading many politicians to the idea of a virtual border. Most believe that a virtual border would be more effective, less costly and more humane than a physical wall.
