TRANSIT COOPERATIVE RESEARCH PROGRAM
The objectives of this research were to (1) evaluate the potential for rehabilitating and reconstructing portions of interstate freeways and similar freeways in the urbanized areas in the United States as new paradigm multimodal transportation facilities and (2) develop strategies to plan and implement these facilities. As joblessness continues to afflict millions of Americans, the national conversation has turned to investments in transportation infrastructure as a path to job creation. Calls to invest in our crumbling highways and bridges and cash-strapped transit systems have come from the AFLCIO and U.S. Chamber of Commerce alike. Despite billions of dollars in federal, state and local funds directed toward the maintenance of existing bridges, 69,223 bridges — 11.5 percent of total highway bridges in the U.S. — are classified as “structurally deficient,” requiring significant maintenance, rehabilitation or replacement.
