The United States has incredibly busy airports – in fact, some of the busiest in the world. That’s good, because it indicates that many of the more than 4 billion global air passengers each year are flying in or out of America. However, a sobering statistic is troubling. America no longer has a single airport listed in the top 25 best airports in the world.

Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA)’s CEO Jeff Parker says that the transit authority will invest $100 billion in transit and tech over the next four decades. He notes that the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority will also commit $120 billion over the next 40 years. Government leaders in Washington, D.C., say an investment of $500 billion over 20 years by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority is not unrealistic.

In an effort to help Hawaii’s residents and policy makers understand the needs of its infrastructure, the ASCE Hawaii Chapter developed this inaugural 2019 Infrastructure Report Card. This report provides an evaluation of some of Hawaii’s key areas of infrastructure, including aviation, bridges, coastal areas, dams, energy, roads, schools, solid waste, stormwater, wastewater, and drinking water. Common challenges facing Hawaii’s infrastructure across the board include aging infrastructure, lack of funding, and sea level rise.

Long neglected, the country’s border crossings now face a $4 billion deficit for much-needed improvements. That trend should be turning significantly though and the border regions are soon to become a lucrative emerging marketplace. The tide has shifted and it appears that border crossing needs will finally be addressed.

In 2018, manufacturing optimism reached record highs as a direct result of competitive tax and regulatory policy. Tax reform and an improved regulatory environment helped to propel faster growth, with manufacturers raising wages, investing in their operations and offering innovative benefits. However, manufacturers increasingly raise concerns about rising transportation costs and insufficient infrastructure. More than 70 percent of manufacturers do not believe the state of our nation’s infrastructure is positioned to respond to the competitive needs of a growing economy.

There is no alternative to providing citizens with healthcare services and government leaders are searching for ways to upgrade, modernize and expand existing facilities while constructing new ones.
