Policies to tackle climate change are likely to lead to lower oil prices, according to the results of this analysis. As governments start implementing the Paris Agreement, they will increasingly need to cut carbon emissions from transport by curbing the combustion of petroleum fuels. Lower oil prices will prevail in this lower-demand scenario, compared to a business-as-usual scenario where oil demand would rise unchecked and in line with economic growth and expanding mobility trends.

The good news is that 79% of Americans agree that they consider themselves an environmentally conscious person, and only 6% strongly disagree with that statement. But as it turns out, it ain’t easy bein’ green. Only 26% of Americans say that they actually consider the environment in their daily actions beyond recycling and turning off the lights. Moreover, people have widely varying opinions on what’s the best way to reduce their home’s carbon footprint. When they do agree, it’s not always on the highest impact methods.

The State’s regulatory approach is multifold, using various policy instruments to improve the efficiency of vehicles, reduce the carbon intensity of fuels, and increase options for mobility. These policies are a mix of market-based approaches, direct regulation approaches, and planning opportunities. These policies will have impacts on the pricing of consumer goods such as automobiles and fuels– both of which represent a significant share of consumer expenditures.

Laura Erikson, Community Development Coordinator in Lewis and Clark County, MT discusses how EPA is making a visible difference in Helena, MT. EPA Brownfields funds were used by the County to investigate contamination at a site that was regarded as the most blighted property in town. After completing the environmental assessment, the Montana Business Assistance Connection, with help from the City and EPA, was able to purchase the site and restore it to residential use standards. Today it is ready for redevelopment. Ms. Erikson explains what the newly cleaned site will mean for the community, calling it a “catalyst” that will benefit the whole area.
