Reinventing Transportation

Ericsson has supported Solar Team Eindhoven to win the World Solar Challenge 2015 with an in-built application based on the Ericsson Connected Traffic Cloud. The application, called Solar Navigator, brings economic driving to the next level. By collecting current weather data and traffic data, Solar Navigator gives suggestions for the optimal route, which will facilitate better decisions regarding the speed of the car during the race and the charging level of the batteries.

NREL: Renewable Energy & Small Businesses

As part of the Small Business Vouchers (SBV) Pilot to help advance the clean energy economy, DOE’s Office of Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy (EERE) is funding up to $20 million worth of vouchers to eligible small businesses. These vouchers allow businesses to access world-class researchers, facilities, and expertise at national laboratories across the country. The Wind and Water Power Program at NREL is well positioned to work for small businesses both as part of and outside of the SBV. This video, featuring Dr. Robert Thresher, presents NREL’s experience and capabilities in supporting small businesses in both the wind and water power sectors.

Report Card for D.C.’s Infrastructure

AMERICAN SOCIETY OF CIVIL ENGINEERS (ASCE)
NATIONAL CAPITAL SECTION
The District of Columbia has 265 bridge structures; 226 of the bridges are owned by the D.C. Department of Transportation (DDOT) and the remaining 39 are owned by the National Park Service (NPS). The average age of a bridge in D.C. is 58 years, and 80% of the bridges will need to be replaced or rehabilitated in the next 10 years. However, the District made significant strides to reduce the number of structurally deficient bridges from 8% to 3% in just three years. Despite this progress, more than 220,000 trips are taken over a structurally deficient bridge every day and a quarter of bridges have at least one major component in fair condition.
