Jim Pawloski

Jim Pawloski is President of the Association of State Dam Safety Officials. He has been a dam safety engineer with the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality since 1989. Jim spent five years with STS Consultants (now AECOM) prior to joining the State of Michigan.

“…What we’re trying to do with the Association of State Dam Safety Officials is to improve the condition of dams and improve the safety of dams and the safety around dams. Our association does that in a couple of ways: one of them is through education…Our organization also helps support all of the state dam safety programs throughout the country…And one of the other things we’ve tried to do is build and encourage a unified front in the dam safety business, to try to create awareness for everyone.”

Infra & the Humanities: The Aesthetics of Water Infrastructure

Infrastructure is not just about connections between technological aspects of civilization, it is also about the lack of connections. For every link between buildings and cities via power lines, fiber optics, and water pipe, there is another fence, a wall, or a vault buried underneath the earth. Environmental art seeks to engage connections between people and landscapes, but it does not have a monopoly on these aesthetic relationships. And in fact, entities such as large public infrastructure authorities often have way more power to engage these connections, or to shut them off.

AMERICAN SOCIETY OF CIVIL ENGINEERS
IOWA SECTION
The 2015 Report Card for Iowa’s Infrastructure has been prepared to acquaint Iowans with the extent, condition and importance of the capital assets that support modern life. It is hoped that this information, along with the grades, will encourage awareness of and concern for these often under-appreciated facilities. Iowa’s ASCE members hope that the grades will alert citizens, media agencies, business leaders, and elected officials to the needs of the infrastructure and induce a commitment to giving it proper care and upkeep.

2014 Georgia Infrastructure Report Card

AMERICAN SOCIETY OF CIVIL ENGINEERS: GEORGIA SECTION
With new grades for the first time since 2009, Georgia’s infrastructure has shown very little improvement and once again received a cumulative grade of C. The Georgia Section of ASCE assessed the same 12 categories as 2009: aviation, bridges, dams, drinking water, energy, parks and recreation, ports, rail, roads, school facilities, solid waste, stormwater, transit and wastewater. Recognizing the importance of transportation to Georgians, we added two new categories in 2014: ports and rail. As indicated by the grade, much work remains to be done, though there are some bright spots.

Great American Infrastructure: Clearwater County, Idaho: Dworshak Dam

This is the twenty-eighth in a series of entries celebrating infrastructure achievements in the United States.
What: The Dworshak Dam, located in Idaho, is the tallest straight-axis concrete dam in the Western Hemisphere.
When: Initial construction began in 1966 & the Dworshak Dam first reached full capacity on July 3, 1973.
