Everyday, thousands of Americans who need regular kidney dialysis board a community or public transit vehicle to access this life-sustaining care. The trips these patients take are time-consuming — they often last more than four hours in duration — and essential, as they absolutely must be made, regardless of the weather or any other circumstances. Dialysis trips also are changing the nature of public transit in many communities.
TRANSPORTATION RIDERS UNITED
To supplement media reports, the personal experience of TRU members, and anecdotes from other bus riders, we conducted analysis of our own. During the week of October 17- 21, 2011, TRU volunteers compared the published schedule for eight major DDOT bus routes with the actual time each bus departed from pre-selected checkpoints including Rosa Parks Transit Center, State Fair Transit Center, Fairlane Center, Northland Center and bus stops located in downtown Detroit. In all, we monitored the actual performance of nearly 4,000 scheduled bus runs.

By all accounts, the nation’s transportation networks continue to languish. Numerous recent reports have called attention to the dire condition of transportation infrastructure in the United States. These reports have all called for additional investment citing potentially disastrous effects on the economy, from manufacturing to real estate and ultimately, to the nation’s global competitiveness. None of these reports focused on the performance of transportation infrastructure and the relationship between performance and economic growth.

BROOKINGS INSTITUTION
Americans possess a well-documented dependency on the automobile—and nowhere is that clearer than in how Americans travel to work. Over three-quarters of commuters drive alone to work, with another 10 percent carpooling. Considering that Americans registered over 133 million private and commercial vehicles in 2009, it makes sense that so many people would drive. However, there remain over 10 million American households who do not own a private vehicle.

Responses to the 2009 OHS suggest that a majority of the public considered it important to have a wide range of transportation alternatives. The majority also strongly supported the provision of facilities that permit continued reliance on the personal automobile in the community in which they live.
NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF AREA AGENCIES ON AGING
Two powerful phenomena have come face-to-face this year, demanding urgent attention. One is demographic: the rapid and dramatic aging of the U.S. population. In 2011, in communities across the country, the leading edge of the Baby Boom generation reached age 65. By 2030, more than 70 million Americans—twice the number in 2000—will be 65 and older. At that time, older adults will comprise nearly one in five Americans.
