This edition of the C&P report is based primarily on data through the year 2010; consequently, the system conditions and performance measures presented should reflect effects of the Safe, Accountable, Flexible, Efficient Transportation Equity Act: A Legacy for Users (SAFETEA-LU), which authorized Federal highway and transit funding for Federal fiscal years 2005 through 2009 (and extended through fiscal year 2012), as well as some of the impact of the funding authorized under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (Recovery Act). None of the impact of funding authorized under the Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century Act (MAP-21) is reflected. In assessing recent trends, this report generally focuses on the 10- year period from 2000 to 2010. The prospective analyses generally cover the 20-year period ending in 2030; the investment levels associated with these scenarios are stated in constant 2010 dollars.
Phoenix, AZ: Measuring Fire Damage on Bridge Structures

Monday, February 10th, 2014In the 1890s, the tiny Rockbridge County community of Goshen was being transformed into the Iron Center of the South. At the heart of town an elaborate steel bridge was constructed to be a symbol of the wealth that awaited investors. Within three years the boom went bust. Over time, icons of Goshen’s heyday disappeared—except for the steel bridge. But more than a century of use had left the structure a rusting relic. This 2004 video traces the unique history of the Goshen Bridge, its importance to the community, and VDOT’s work to preserve and restore this important landmark.

In addition to economic growth, transportation improvements are needed to ensure safe, reliable mobility and quality of life for all Michiganders. Meeting Michigan’s need to modernize and maintain its system of roads, highways and bridges will require a significant boost in local, state and federal funding.
Oregon: Columbia River Crossing Project Risks

In 2005 Oregon and Washington began a process to identify the key needs for re-designing five miles of freeway and interchanges including the Interstate 5 Bridge, which was built in two phases in 1917 and 1958. In 2013 the Oregon legislature voted to support a bi-state proposal in which the costs, risk, and management experience were shared with Washington state. Later in 2013, the Washington legislature failed to support the project…Losing this partner raises many questions for the future of the project.
2014 Georgia Infrastructure Report Card

With new grades for the first time since 2009, Georgia’s infrastructure has shown very little improvement and once again received a cumulative grade of C. The Georgia Section of ASCE assessed the same 12 categories as 2009: aviation, bridges, dams, drinking water, energy, parks and recreation, ports, rail, roads, school facilities, solid waste, stormwater, transit and wastewater. Recognizing the importance of transportation to Georgians, we added two new categories in 2014: ports and rail. As indicated by the grade, much work remains to be done, though there are some bright spots.

Repair Minnesota: Creating Good Jobs While Preparing Our Infrastructure for Climate Change

Our state’s roads and bridges, water, waste water, transit, energy, and communication systems need increased investment to become efficient, safe, and productive for Minnesotans. Repairing Minnesota will create good jobs, make our systems more efficient and less polluting, and safeguard communities from the impact of climate change, like severe weather such as floods and droughts.
Lake Washington, WA: Coffer Cell Launch
Tuesday, December 10th, 2013On Nov. 26, 2013, SR 520 bridge construction crews launched a 660-ton coffer cell onto Lake Washington. This coffer cell will be used to create a dry work space so that crews can complete repairs to the end walls of Pontoon U and Pontoon V on Lake Washington.
