The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) reported today that U.S. airlines and foreign airlines serving the United States carried an all-time high of 848.1 million systemwide (domestic and international) scheduled service passengers in 2014, 2.5 percent more than in 2013 and 1.2 percent more than the previous record-high of 838.4 million reached in 2007.
GLOBAL GATEWAY ALLIANCE
New York area airports continue to lag behind their international and national competitors when it comes to modern, efficient mass transit access, according to a new survey released today by the Global Gateway Alliance, comparing airport access at the world’s top 30 busiest airports for passenger traffic with those in the New York-New Jersey region. (Survey below)
Airports have historically incorporated BMPs to comply with these requirements, such as stormwater detention ponds and vegetated swales, many of which have exposed open water, vegetation, and other design characteristics that attract wildlife. Research shows that 10 of the 15 bird species most hazardous to aircraft are highly attracted to these types of water features (DeVault et al. 2011)…To address this hazardous wildlife concern, the FAA has established guidelines for airport stormwater management to provide for aircraft safety.

New York City’s airports will get a major facelift with Governor Andrew Cuomo’s 2015 Opportunity Agenda.
The announcement doesn’t come as a surprise, given that LaGuardia recently suffered some very public infrastructure criticisms. Add to that over $5 billion in one-off legal settlements from Wall Street recently awarded to New York State, and you’ve got a perfect recipe for infrastructure investment.

On a global level the aviation market was boosted by strong growth in emerging markets, transporting approximately 3.1 billion people and 49.3 million tonnes of cargo according to the International Air Transport Association (IATA) in 2013. Airports Council International (ACI) figures show 4.6% growth in passengers compared with 2.4% growth in global GDP, reflecting the continued economic recovery after the financial and economic crises of 2008-2009. For air navigation services (ANS) the key measures of activity are Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) flights, IFR flight hours and IFR airport movements.

AIRPORT COOPERATIVE RESEARCH PROGRAM
Efficient and effective wildlife management is a challenging endeavor in any environment, but the safety concerns and human activities at airports add complexities to any management plan. Many species of wildlife in airport environments are potentially hazardous to aircraft operation safety; those most hazardous at a particular airport will depend on the specific location and array of attractants, such as water and certain vegetation, whether naturally occurring or not, on and around airport grounds.
