This video highlights the key component of the project, a Single Point Urban Interchange (SPUI).
The SPUI is designed to help motorists travel safely and efficiently on I-94 and Westnedge Avenue.
This type of interchange takes up less space than a regular interchange, and is safer because it
reduces the number of points where vehicles can collide. A SPUI requires fewer traffic signals, handles
larger volumes of traffic, and provides wider turns for larger vehicles with more room to safely
navigate through the interchange. The $44 million project to expand I-94 from four to six lanes between
Oakland Drive and Portage Road in Portage in Kalamazoo County was opened to traffic on Nov. 17, 2011. – MichiganDOT on YouTube
