Serafin Fernandez, LEED® AP, Senior Project Manager for Harris & Associates recently became the newly elected President of the National Board of Directors of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE). During his two-year term, Fernandez will work with other board members to develop a strategic plan and move the organization forward in its mission to empower the Hispanic community to realize their fullest potential and impacts the world through STEM awareness, access, support and development. Additionally, Mr. Fernandez serves as chairman of the 2011 SHPE Conference that will take place October 26-30, in Anaheim, California.
Fernandez began his involvement in SHPE as student member at Purdue University while pursuing a degree in construction engineering and management. Fernandez said, “What attracted me(to SHPE) was the family environment and the opportunity to network with Hispanic engineers throughout the country.”
SHPE was founded in Los Angeles, California in 1974 by a group of engineers employed by the City of Los Angeles. Their objective was to form a national organization of professional engineers to serve as role models in the Hispanic community. Today, SHPE has more than 10,000 student, professional, corporate and government members and has a $5 million budget.
